But they’re not always necessary.
What Are Fillers?
Fillers are ingredients added primarily to improve texture, bulk up a formula, or reduce production costs.
Some common fillers in protein powders include:
- Maltodextrin
- Dextrin
- Modified starches
- Various thickening agents
While these ingredients can help create a smoother or thicker drink, they don’t contribute meaningful nutritional value.
Why Gums Are Often Added
Many protein powders contain gums such as:
- Xanthan gum
- Guar gum
- Cellulose gum
These ingredients are used to create a thicker texture and help powders mix more easily.
They’re commonly found in processed foods and supplements because they can improve mouthfeel and stability.
However, some people prefer to limit these types of additives in their daily nutrition.
The Role of “Natural Flavors”
The phrase “natural flavors” can be confusing for many consumers.
While the source of these flavors may originate from natural materials, the final ingredient can still go through extensive processing before being added to foods or supplements.
In many flavored protein powders, natural flavors are combined with sweeteners and other additives to create specific taste profiles like:
- Cookies and cream
- Birthday cake
- Chocolate brownie
