MCT Oil Powder: What It Is and Why It Is in a Protein Blend

MCT shows up on a lot of labels and almost never gets explained. Here is the plain version.

What MCTs are

MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride. Triglycerides are fats, and they are sorted by the length of their carbon chains. Most dietary fat is long-chain. Medium-chain fats are shorter, and that length difference changes how the body handles them.

Long-chain fats take a longer route through the lymphatic system. Medium-chain fats go more directly to the liver, which is why MCTs are associated with quick, steady energy rather than a slow burn.†

Coconut is the most common source, and it is the source used here.

Why powder instead of oil

MCT oil is a liquid. A protein blend is a powder. Spray-drying is the step that bridges them: the oil is sprayed into a drying chamber with a carrier, and what comes out is a free-flowing powder that behaves like every other dry ingredient in the bag.

The practical result is a fat that mixes smooth in a shaker rather than floating on top of your drink the way straight MCT oil does.

What it does in the serving

Three things:

  1. Energy. MCTs are the fast-access fat in the blend.†
  2. Texture. Fat is what keeps a protein shake from reading thin and watery. A blend with some fat in it has body.
  3. Satiety. Fat alongside 23 grams of protein is part of why a serving holds you.†

A note on how it is made

Spray-dried MCT powder uses a carrier to hold the oil in dry form: in this case acacia, a tree gum, with silicon dioxide as a flow agent. Those ride in with the organic MCT oil powder rather than being added separately, and they are the reason the printed ingredient statement reads longer than the six-ingredient blend line.

That is the honest version. The blend is six ingredients; the MCT powder arrives with its carrier, the way every spray-dried oil does.

Where it sits

Organic MCT oil powder is one of the six ingredients in Zeotein Cacao, alongside grass-fed bone broth protein, grass-fed collagen peptides, organic fermented cacao, organic sea moss, and zeolite mineral.
